survey results

Hi! Finally, I’m gonna show you the results of survey we did in survey monkey. Thank you for waiting! And thank you for your cooperation!

Total: 82 people

Gender: Male(22), Female(60)

Nationality: Japanese(70), American(6), British(1), Ukuraine(1), Germany(1), Korean(1), Korean American(1), Filipino(1)

Age: Teens(5), Over 20(9)

Job: mostly student

Totally 82 people cooperated to our survey, and this is very big number! Wow! We are soooo glad! The breakdown is 22 males and 60 females. I’m so happy to have much answers from males because the topic is feminism and because we are both female students! Mostly is Japanese but we could also collect from various nationalities. Most of them were university student.

Q. Do you know the word “feminism” or “feminist”?

A. Many people knew the words. Many of them may know a bit about it but not much for the details.

Q. What kind of images do you have?

A. Many people wrote equal, right for women, gender equality and so on. They also wrote strong, #METOO, pink, independence, sometimes aggressive, very negative in American context.

Q. Do you have interested in it?

A. The answers, of course, very differ. Some have interested in it, some say don’t, and some say a little.

Q. Are you for or against it?

A. For(24), Against(5), Neither side(24), Having no idea(29)

Almost 3 to 4 people answered neither or don’t know neither side.

Q. Do you know any feminism movement?

A. Many people knew #METOO. I guess this is because this movement became very big news recently. Though only few knew for the further details or even don’t know any of movements.

Q. Have you ever felt gender inequality? Why?

A. They answered that they feel gender inequality in working situation, money payment at restaurant (men should pay more than women or should pay all for women. In Japanese, おごり), P.E. lessons (men should run for longer distance that women), job searching (women should wear skirt for job hunting in Japan), bothered from stereotypes (women must cook, do housekeeping, etc.).

Q. In which situation do you think women are in lower rank than men?

A. Company post(54), Company salary(12), In house(4), Between friends(0), Between couples(2), Any other ideas(5), There are no situations like that (both sex are equal)(5)

I’m happy to hear that no one have felt inequality between friends. Many people felt inequality in working situation.

Q. What do you think about the systems that have priority for women? ("women-only vehicles" or "ladies days")

A. Many people, especially women answered women only car is a good idea. Many think it could be helpful and safe for women. Some women got the advantage of the car and the day but some don’t use it or think it’s unfair.

Q. Do you think some systems that have priority for men are needed?  Or do you want them? ("men-only vehicles" or "men's day")

A. Most men think it’s unfair only to have ladies day but not having men’s day, so they long to have men’s day to get equal advantage.

Guessing!!

Q. What do you think the Japan ranking is for gender equality? (out of 144 countries) (survey by The World Economy Forum in 2017)

The answer is … rank 114! Around half of them were correct!

Q. Which country do you think is ranked in top 5 for the gender equality? (same as Question 8)

The answer is … Surprisingly, Rwanda!! Only few got the right answer. Well done if you got The One!

Q. Which country do you think is ranked in the bottom 5 for gender equality? (same as Question 8)

The answer is … Iran! Many people could guess this is the answer. I added “Senegal” and “Colombia” intentionally, but how many of you noticed something. I added for multiple choice because Japan had a game at World Cup! I hope you enjoy the very last question!

Lastly, I'd like to thank you all again, for visiting our homepage and answering questions. We are really really glad if you feel something from this blog or get interested in feminism or feminist. We two could learn many new ways of veiwing and new knowledge that could be helpful someday by publishing this blog.

Thank you.

  1. It is amazing that you got responses from so many people on your survey. Thank you for reporting the results on your blog. I am a bit surprised by Rwanda coming in among the top five for gender equality. I'd like to look into that and investigate the reasons for it. Perhaps it's a matrilineal society where women have traditionally held a considerable amount of power. Or it could be that after the terrible genocide there, they all realized they would have to make some radical changes.
    Cheers, Joseph D.
