Gender Law

Hello!

Isn't it very hot recently? Today in Tokyo it is said to be 38℃ in the noon as the highest temperture for this year. In Algeria 51℃ was marked in July 5th which is the highest recored in the world. Even in Oman, 42.6℃ was marked as the lowest tempreture for one day. The world is getting hotter and hotter now.

So today I would like to talk about the hot topics in feminism. It is the rules or law related to gender in the world. Many changes happened in the rules this few years and has become the active topic.

I'm going to introduce some law or rules by countries.

●Child Marriage
Child Marriage is one of the most difficult problem in feminism. In some countries especially in Asia and Afirica, they have religious thought to marriage and don't really care about the age. But in India a rule was made to protect the girls. The Child Marriage Restraint Act, prohibits a girl who is not 18 (age defined by the Hindu Marriage Act) to get married. In developed countries, the age which can get married is written but in most developing countries is asia it was not written so it was very surprising.

●Driving
I think this is the most popular change. The change happened in Saudi Arabia this June 24th. The change in the law was announced last year and gave the whole world a great shock because Saudi Arabia is the most strict countries toward woman for its religion (Islam) and was the only country which woman didn't have the right to drive. It was like "at last" it became free for the female in Saudi Arabia. Still only 10 woman has the right but in the future more and more woman will get the right.

●Breastfeeding
I think this is the topic most people don't know much about. It became a news in Iceland that one female politician breastfeeded her baby while she spoke at the national parliament. In America, President Obama signed to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on March 30, 2010. It requires an employer to provide reasonable break time for an employee to express breast milk for her nursing child for one year after the child's birth. It is also needed because employee has need to express milk for her own health. The employer is not required to compensate an employee receiving reasonable break time for any work time spent for such purpose. The employer must also provide a place, other than a bathroom, for the employee to express breast milk. In Japan there are bathroom which has room for breastfeeding but still it is not allowed to even take children to their working place for many jobs so it is very innovative for us ;asian.

There are more and more rules and laws related to female so if you have interset there are more written on the references I put on below so please chech it out!

New laws are made and changes happen to make more better world for female and both gender!

  1. I'm very glad that you took an international perspective on this issue by looking at changes to the laws in the US, India, and Saudi Arabia. These are all interesting and they illustrate how countries are at completely different places on the continuum of "nearly no rights for women" to "almost complete gender equality."

  2. Feminism is a relatively new ideology and it is quiet interesting to me. I do support feminism. Men and women do the same job and they dont get paid the same amount. Its just not right. The inequality has got to be terminated. In japan, I guess theres a lot of inequality between men and women. Like salary gap mentioned above, there's a firm culture that women stay home and raise children while men go to work. Since I myself grew up watching my dad goes to work and mom stay at home taking care of me and my brother, I found myself taking it for granted that women stay home. Having said that, theres some change going on with the issue and i hope in the few generation to come women can enjoy the same right and opportunity.
